In Year 6 this term, we are finding out ‘Who we are.’ The central idea for our Unit of Inquiry is ‘We understand how humans are shaping the world for today and tomorrow.’ As part of inquiry we will be trying to answer the following:
- How does technology support our everyday life?
- How will the issues today affect tomorrow’s world?
- How have humans shaped the world?
We will be investigating how humans have changed over time and learn about Darwin’s theory of evolution. We will also look how the methods of communication that humans use has developed and how enhancements in technology have assisted this. We will examine the technology that we use today and learn how to use algorithms to program computers to carry out specific instructions and control sprites that can be used to create games.
To further our inquiry, we will also look at the implications human activity have had on the earth. We will discuss climate change and how the production of green house gases are affecting the earth. We will also discuss ways in which we can help the environment by reducing, recycling and reusing our waste.

In English, we will be studying the book ‘Stormbreaker’ by Anthony Horowitz. This book about a teenage boy who becomes a spy and will provide the children with a range of writing opportunities. The children will write recounts in the role of a character, persuasive texts to influence their audience and information texts about some of the things the book’s protagonists comes across.
In maths this term we will be focussing on place value and calculation strategies. The children will investigate the relationship between place value columns and why it is important to be able to recognise the value of a given digit in a number. They will also practise and refine their calculation strategies and then use them to solve a range of different mathematical problems.
