In Year 5 this term, we are learning ‘How we express ourselves’. The central idea for our Unit of Inquiry is ‘Art and culture have been shaped by those willing to break societal norms.’ As part of our inquiry, we will be exploring the following lines of inquiry:
- What is art?
- How do different perceptions shape art and culture?
- How does art impact us?
During our Unit of Inquiry, we will begin by exploring the concept of art and what it is. We will do this by exploring the work of some of the more controversial artists throughout history and investigating the different techniques they used to create their masterpieces. We will then use a range of different media to create our own unique pieces of art in the style of the work that has inspired us. We will debate how their art pushed boundaries and what impact their work has had on society and ourselves after reflecting on it.
To further our inquiry, we will also investigate light and colour in our science lessons. We will investigate how light travels and that we see objects because they give out or reflect light into our eyes. We will also use chromatography to investigate how colours are often made up of other colours- investigating ‘is green really green?’.
In English, we begin the term by studying poetry through the book ‘Werewolf Club Rules’ by Joseph Coelho. This book will allow the children to play around with form and language and write about memories and social problems in a poetic way. We will then move on to learning about ‘The Guggenheim Mystery’ by Robin Stevens. This book will help the children to develop their storytelling and consider the way that their writing has an impact on their audience.
In maths we will be covering multiplication and division, before moving onto fractions later in the term. In multiplication, we will be learning to multiply 4-digit numbers and divide up to 4-digit numbers using formal methods. In fractions, we will be exploring equivalent fractions, improper and mixed number fractions, as well as ordering, adding and subtracting these fractions. We will use lots of different manipulatives to support our learning and develop a strong understanding.
