Our unit of inquiry
Politics and how it shapes our society, our lives and our future.
Our unit of inquiry will begin by exploring our key lines of inquiry through activities such as; whole class debates in the style of the House of Commons; creating our own political parties with policies and manifestos; discussing and debating key political concerns and issues; creating a timeline of key political events; creating a guide to influential British political leaders and much more. We are even hoping to finish off our topic with a political leader coming in to speak to the children.
Our core texts this term will be ‘Where The River Runs Gold’ by Sita Brahmachari. The book is about two children who must risk everything to escape their fate and find the impossible. The few live in luxury, whilst the millions like them crowd together in compounds, surviving on meagre rations and governed by Freedom Fields - the organisation that looks after you, as long as you opt in. The bees have long disappeared; instead children must labour on farms, pollinating crops by hand so that the nation can eat. This will give us great opportunities for writing, such as diary entries, recounts, letters, explanatory texts and much more. Within our writing we will also be focusing on grammar, punctuation and spelling; having a short session of each element alongside our English sessions, to ensure our writing has flow, is well structured and clear.

Lines of Inquiry
- How has politics changed over time and changed our country?
- How do your thoughts and opinions make us who we are?
- How can politics shape our future?
In Maths we will be focusing on multiplication and division at the beginning of the term, where we will be learning formal methods of long multiplication and long division. We will then move onto fractions, which will take up a large majority of the term, as this can be a very tricky concept to grasp. The final weeks of the term will focus on decimals and percentages as well as consolidating our learning across the term, ensuring the children can use their understanding to solve multi-step problems and word problems as well as reasoning and problem-solving challenges. We will try to give the children real life scenarios to apply their learning to, so that they can see the value in what they are doing.
