Our unit of inquiry
Our theme: ‘Who we are’
We understand how humans are shaping the world for today and tomorrow.
Lines of Inquiry
- How does technology support our everyday lives?
- How will the issues of today effect tomorrow’s world?
- How have humans shaped the world we know today?
Our unit of inquiry will begin with a no technology day, whereby the children try to have a day at school using as little technology as possible. We will also compare how well we can do tasks with technology and without, leading to discussions about how technology has changed the way we work and whether this is for the better or for the worse. We will then move on to exploring the issues that we face in the future and how we may be able to overcome them using technology; designing our own prototypes to solve these issues. In computing, we will be learning about coding and how we can use technology to design our own games. The children will also be investigating how humans have changed the world over time, creating timelines which reflect the technological advances we have seen through the decades.
Our core text this term will be ‘Stormbreaker’ by Anthony Horowitz. This book is all about a fourteen-year-old called Alex, who is forcibly recruited into MI6. Armed with secret gadgets, he is sent to investigate Herod Sayle, a man who is offering state-of-the-art Stormbreaker computers to every school in the country. But the teenage spy soon finds himself in mortal danger. We will explore this text by writing our own diary entries in role as a key character, writing setting description, instruction manuals, letters in role and much more.

In maths we will be focusing on place value this term, recapping and expanding our key knowledge on concepts such as rounding, ordering and comparing numbers, counting up and down in given values, finding the value of digits and much more all relating to place value. We will be focusing heavily on fluency questions and arithmetic this term to help us identify any gaps in understanding, which can be responded to in class. We will be using resources such as fluent in 5 and Big Maths Beat That CLIC questions to improve fluency and revise key mathematical concepts.
