Year 3 - Term 6

24/5/2019

In Year 3 this term, our learning is focused around ‘Sharing the Planet.’  The central idea for our Unit of Inquiry is ‘The systems that animals and plants use are interdependent on each other.’  As part of our inquiry we will be trying to answer the following:
  • How can we use our knowledge of plants and animals to help us make healthy food choices?
  • What do animals eat and what nutrition does it provide them with?
What are ecosystems and how do they work?

We will begin our inquiry by looking at ourselves and how we maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle.  This will form part of Healthy Living Week.  We will then continue this learning but develop it to include animals, finding out what they need to stay healthy and how they maintain and balanced lifestyle.  As part of this, we will be looking at the kind of plants and other animals that form part of their diet and how all these component parts work together to create ecosystems.  Using inspiration from nature, we will also be creating art work using natural materials.
In English, we will using the core texts ‘Lion Boy’ by Zizou Corder and the collection of information texts ‘Protecting Food Chains’ by a range of authors.  Our main focus will be writing to inform so we will be using the texts to help us write fact files and newspaper reports.  We will be consolidating the learning from across the year using paragraphs, subheadings and bullet points.  We will also be considering the use of bold, underlining and italics to add emphasis to particular words or phrases.

Our Unit of Inquiry this term has a strong science focus and much of our science learning leads directly from the central idea.  We will be looking at the reproductive systems of plants and how they use and gain nutrients.  This will link with how animals and humans also use and gain nutrients.
Our PE focus this term is rounders and tennis.  PE will continue to be on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons, mostly outside, so please make sure that your child has their kit in school on these days so that they can take part in these lessons.
In maths we will be continuing our work on telling the time including working out the duration between two different times and how long different events take. After that, we will be looking at properties of shapes including parallel and perpendicualr lines as well as an introduction to angles.  We will also be looking at mass and capacity.  Big Maths, Beat That will also continue with a key focus on the three, four and eight times tables.
