In Year 3 this term, we are finding out ‘How the World Works.’ The central idea for our Unit of Inquiry is ‘Properties and changes of matter provide opportunities and challenges .’ As part of inquiry we will be trying to answer the following:
How did the materials from the Stone Age to the Iron Age?
- What changed in Great Britain between the Stone Age and the Iron Age and what challenges did it create?
- How do different techniques change products?

at how they developed and changed over time and the challenges and opportunities they were faces with. We will be finding out where and when they lived and how the landscape was similar and different between the places and across the time periods.
In addition, we will book studying cave paintings. These will inspire us to create our own work using block printing techniques to produce the same pattern over and over again. We will also need to consider what we like and dislike about our own work.

To further our inquiry, we will be looking closely at rocks, their apperance and their properties. We will also look at home fossisl are formed and how different types of soil are created.
In English, we will be looking at poetry. We are using the poem “The Age of Stones” as our inspirtaiton and will be looking at the language and imagery created it in, before having a go at writing our own poems. We will also be reading other poetry in class to compare the different styles of poets.
Our maths focus this term is geometry and measurement. As part of this we will be looking at angles and different ways to describe lines (e.g. horizontal, parallel). We will also be looking at capacity and mass later in the term.
