In Year 3 this term, we are finding out how we are ‘Sharing the Planet.’ The central idea for our Unit of Inquiry is ‘The ocean environment can be altered by human activity .’ As part of inquiry we will be trying to answer the following:
- How does the ocean provide for people?
- What lives in the ocean and how does it survive there?
- How are the ocean’s resources used and what can we do to protect them?
We will be finding out what the ocean landscape is like at the moment and how it has changed. In particular, we will look at the impact of fishing including different methods used here and around the world. As part of this, we will be visiting Hastings to find out about fisherman today and in the past. We will also be finding out how to cook different dishes using fish.
In addition, we will be looking at the topical issue of how plastic is affecting the oceans and what we can do about it. Pupils will be finding out some ideas other people have used to try and help decrease the amount of plastic in the oceans.

To further our inquiry, we will be looking closely at plants within the ocean and on land. We will be comparing the differing needs of plants and the essenttal requirements. We will also be looking at pollination and seed dispersal. A trip to Bedgebury forms part of this inquiry.
In English, we are taking our ocean theme back to Greek myths where we will be reaidng about the God of the Sea, Poseidon. We will be reaidng the text “Percy Jackson and the lightning thief” in class to support this learning.
Our maths focus will continue to be fractions initally, focusing on equivalent fractions as well as addition and subtraction. We will then move on to telling and comparing times.

Home Learning:
As part of our learning about Greek Gods, Cherry class were challenged to find out more about a God of their choice and present their learning in a creative way. Drew chose to show her learning as a trailer for a movie!
