Year 3 - Term 3

18/12/2020

Term 3
In Year 3 this term, we are finding out ‘How We Express Ourselves.’  The central idea for our Unit of Inquiry is ‘Legends can inform people about the culture and history of countries.’  As part of our inquiry, we will be trying to answer the following:
  • How can legends be portrayed in different ways?
  • What do legends in Britain tell us about our country?
We will begin our inquiry by investigating what a legend is.  This will be introduced through ‘living legends’ and what makes them legends.  This will lead us on to our main focus of the inquiry – the legend of Robin Hood and the legend of St George and the Dragon.  We will be learning about both of these stories through our English work as well as our unit of inquiry.
In English, we will be looking at how three key story elements are demonstrated in these legends; the description of characters, the description of the setting and how the plot is told.  We will look at examples in a variety of texts and use our unpicking techniques before having a try ourselves.  Our final challenge will be to turn the story of Robin Hood into a short story!  We will need to think very carefully about our word choices to achieve the best possible story we can.

The legends will also support our art study.  We will be investigating how moods can be portrayed through the use of colour and tone and using these to create a woodland painting showing different moods.  We will be inspired by paintings by Henri Rousseau and our focus will be on developing colour mixing skills as well as learning to use watercolour techniques and brush skills.  As part of science, we will be learning how sound is made and how it travels.  We will also investigate how and why pitch and volume increase and decrease.

In maths we will be revising multiplying and dividing by 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s from Year 2, before moving on to multiplying and dividing by 4s and 8s.  We will spot the relationship between the 2, 4 and 8 times table to help us with this.  We will apply this learning to investigate different strategies for multiplying or dividing two digit numbers.  This will include using partitioning and long multiplication.  We will also learn to multiply by doing repeated addition on a numberline, as well as dividing using repeated subtraction on a number line.  Being fluent in our times tables and counting in steps will help us with this.

You can also join in our learning by…
  • Finding out about the legend of St George and the dragon.
  • Watching, reading or listening to the legend of Robin Hood.
  • Finding any painting, pictures, music, plays or other expressive arts that show a legend.
  • Going to a Robin Hood panto even if virtual!
  • Investigating the differences between a myth and a legend.
  • Visiting places where King Arthur’s legend is based.
Finding and studying landscape paintings by a famous artist, considering how they have used colour to create mood.
