Our Unit of Inquiry – Year 3
Our beliefs and values influence the way we interact with other people
Our beliefs and values influence the way we interact with other people
Our unit of inquiry will involve us asking “who we are”. We will be trying to discover more about ourselves and will ask many different questions along the way. Our inquiry will focus on religion (what different people believe and why), what our own values are, why they are important to us and what the values of the school are. We may also consider famous people who have stood up for what they believed in and valued, and the consequences of this.
We will further our learning by considering if you should always believe what you see. This element of our learning will see us investigating how light works, how it can play tricks on our eyes and how magic tricks are not what they seem to be. We will also look at some optical illusions and some artists who create pictures that cannot be real.

Lines of Inquiry
- How do peoples’ beliefs and values affect their choices?
- What do different people believe about the same event?
- Can belief become fact?
Our focus text in English for Term 2 will be ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgeson Burnett. We will be looking at how the characters are influenced by the values and beliefs of their parents, and how what they believe to be true, changes. We will also be looking at recounts and how these must be accurate but interesting.
In spellings we will continue to look at the Year 4 spelling patterns. This term we will focus on adding a range of suffixes to root words. We will also continue to learn words from the Year 4 statutory word list and to revise and consolidate the Term 1 spelling patterns.
In maths we will be focusing on two areas of the curriculum. We will start the term focusing on the addition and subtraction of three-digit numbers. We will then move on to look at multiplication and division, in particular the 3s, 4s and 8s times tables.
You might like to join in with our learning, maybe you could…
· Learn a magic trick to show to the class and then explain how you did it
· Read the Secret Garden and maybe write a book review or a character description of your favourite character
· Research the different symbols of faith
Thank you for your continued support.
