In Year 3 this term, we are finding out ‘Who We Are.’ The central idea for our Unit of Inquiry is ‘Learning requires resilience and a diverse approach .’ As part of inquiry we will be trying to answer the following:
- How can learning be accessible to everyone
- How can I be responsible for my own learning and personal success?
We will be finding out how people learn in different ways and trying to find out how best we learn. We will also be looking at skills we have learnt in the past (such as learning to write our names, catching a ball, adding numbers), how we learnt them and what resources we used to help us. We will also be looking closely at ourselves and how we learn best and how this is similar or different to others. As part of this, we will be developing the skills of sketching and shading to create an accurate self-portrait.
To further our inquiry, we will be testing our learning using scientific methods. We will use skills such as observing, collecting and analysing data and drawing conclusions. We will be presenting our findings to our class mates.

In English, we will be looking at writing for entertainment. Initally we will be focusing on describing characters in fiction and we then developing our learning to write poems about ourselves. Adjectives will be a key feature of our work so we will be using thesaurus to help us make sure that we choose exctiing adjectives. We will also be writing about ourselves and others, and mimicking different authors styles to improve our writing skills. This will include studying how writing differs for different purposes and different audiences. Our core text is ‘Leon and the Place Between’ by Graham Baker-Smith. This will be used to inspire our writing.
Our maths focus this term is place value and addition and subtraction. In Year 3, we work with numbers up to a thousand so it is important to understand the value of each part of the number. When learning about addiion and subtraction, we will look at different methods including the column method. Pupils will be able to select the method that works best for them to solve different problems further enhancing their learning in our unit of inquiry.
Times tables form a key part of the Year 3 maths curriculum. This term we will begin our ‘Big Maths, Beat That’ challenge which focuses on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. We will start by using different facts that we know to help us practise. We will look more closely at each of the times tables in Term 2.
