This term our Unit of Inquiry is themed around ‘Sharing the Planet’ and our central idea is ‘Humans can have an impact on other living things’. We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
- Why is the environment changing and how do we know?
- What impact do humans have on living species?
- How do plants survive and what is their structure?
In unit of inquiry this term, we will be studying different species in depth and will find out about how their habitats are suited to them. This will lead us into finding out about how their habitats provide them with their basic needs and what humans can do to have a positive impact on different species of animals. We will discuss the changes we can make to help take care of our planet and have a positive impact on the environment. We will explore where we might find different animals across the world and will locate this on a world map. We will also learn the names and structures of common plants and discuss the importance of these in our ecosystem. As part of the creative curriculum, children will have the opportunity to learn songs about our earth and will study the work of Andy Warhol whose pieces feature endangered species.
In English this term we will be reading ‘The Rainbow Bear’ by Michael Morpurgo. We will also support our learning by looking at additional fiction texts, information texts and a selection of poems.
To begin with, we will explore the text by making inference and explaining our reasoning for this, using evidence from the book. We will use drama to understand the characters’ feelings in the story and will apply our learning from the year so far to show our readers how a character is feeling through our writing. We will practise using conjunctions to create compound sentences and will learn to use the relative clauses ‘who/which’, for example, the zoo, who has captured Rainbow Bear, are keeping him in a cage. Using this and our knowledge from unit of inquiry, we will write persuasive letters about improving the lives of endangered species and Rainbow Bear.
In maths this term, we will be consolidating our learning so far. We will begin by revising and applying our learning of fractions, before practising solving questions that involve the four operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This will include solving missing number problems. We will use a range of strategies to solve these questions, and will also apply our knowledge to solve problems, for example, we will revise using jottings and drawing part-whole models to help us to understand problems better.
This term in P.E, we will be practising some core athletics skills in preparation for sports day. Year 2 P.E lessons will be taking place on a Monday afternoon and a Tuesday afternoon. Please make sure that your child has their P.E kit in school for these days and please ensure that all their clothing is clearly named.
