This term our unit of inquiry is ‘People learn and adapt in order to survive’. The children will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
- How can we convey a powerful message through art?
- How have human organisations changed over time?
- What impact did the choices people made have on the Great Fire of London?
Our unit of inquiry will lead onto learning about The Great Fire of London. The children will be learning about and sharing ideas based on this significant event in History. They will collect evidence about the main events, learn about significant individuals, including Samuel Pepys, who played an important part during this time and will look at the places that were affected by this event in history. After this, the children will use our DT skills to design and make a purposeful moving vehicle. We will challenge them to find a way to create a ‘moving’ vehicle. The children will evaluate these designs and discuss how things have changed in order to survive. Lastly, within our unit of inquiry the children will learn to use art to convey powerful messages about The Great Fire of London.
In English this term, the children will begin by exploring the features of and creating our own instructions for how to bake bread rolls. This will link with our unit of inquiry learning and how the Great Fire of London started in Farriner’s bakery. The children will explore a range of descriptive techniques that we can use in our writing and will create an ‘eye witness’ description of the Great Fire of London to apply these. They will learn how to use commas to list adjectives and will use this skill to use a list of 3 for description (for example, the crimson, scorching and blazing flames). In the second half of the term, the children will create their very own newspaper report about the events of 1666 and will gather their own facts and information in preparation for this. The children will learn how to use different conjunctions to extend their sentences in their reports. At the end of the term, the children will be exploring different poems and will adapt them to create their own one based on The Great Fire of London.
In maths this term, the children will begin to learn to add and subtract two 2-digit numbers. They will begin by adding and subtracting with no carrying or exchanging (i.e. 34 + 23 and 45 – 31) and, when they are confident with this, will begin to exchange when adding (i.e. 35 + 27) and subtracting (i.e. 43 – 28). The children will be taught a range of methods to solve these types of calculation, including partitioning, drawing representations of the numbers and number lines. This term, they will also be counting money in pence and pounds, as well as making different money amounts using both coins and notes. After this, they will then be applying this knowledge by adding money amounts together and calculating change. At the end of this term, we will explore the concepts of multiplication and division by making equal groups, sharing into equal groups and using arrays to help us. The children will also be beginning to learn to recall our multiplication and division facts for our 2, 5 and 10 times table.
In PE this term, the children will explore sequencing a range of movements to create a Great Fire of London themed dance.
