This term our unit of inquiry is ‘Identities change and develop over time and reflect evolving values’. We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
- How have the toys we value changed over time?
- How do we collect evidence?
- How do our possessions reflect our identity?
In English our core texts for this term are ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’ by David Lucas and ‘Toys in Space’ by Mini Grey. We will be asking questions and predicting what will happen in each story by looking at the front cover and reading the blurb. After receiving a letter from Bunting himself, we will plan and write our own letter in response to this. Later on in the term, we will learn how to plan and write a newspaper report. We will use role-play to practise reporting on events that have happened in the story. After reading Toys in Space, we will create story maps to help us retell the story.
In maths, we are beginning by recapping and furthering our understanding of number and the place value of digits in 2-digit numbers up to 100. We will do this by exploring how to partition 2-digit numbers, not just in to ‘tens’ and ‘ones’, but into different combinations also (i.e. 38 = 30 + 8 or 38 = 21 + 17). We will explore this both practically and by using drawings or jottings in part-part-whole models and place value grids. After securing our understanding of place value, we are going to use <, > and = to compare and order 2-digit numbers. We will use this to support our learning of addition and subtraction. After adding and subtracting multiples of 10 to 2-digit numbers, we will add 1-digit numbers to and subtract them from 2-digit numbers, as well as adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers. Additionally, we will practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
In PE this term, we will be developing the children’s skills of basic movements including running and jumping, throwing and catching. We will begin to apply these in a range of activities.
