Year 2 - Term 1

14/9/2017

Year 2 - Term 114/9/2017

This term our Unit of Inquiry is Who we are and our Key Concept is ‘Farms around our community meet our needs in different ways’.  We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
  • How has farmers’ equipment changed over time?
  • How do we support our local community?
  • Why should we buy local produce?
Our unit of inquiry will lead onto learning about the life cycle of plants, identifying and naming a variety of plants, and creating our own moving vehicle in design and technology.  We will be observing and comparing different farm equipment overtime.  We will also be discussing the pros and cons of buying local produce.

We will be basing our English lessons on ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ and ‘What the Ladybird Heard Next’ by Julia Donaldson.  We will be predicting what will happen in the story from the front cover and the blurb and by the end of the term, will have even produced our very own ‘What the Ladybird Heard Next’ stories.  We will be developing our story mapping skills in order to plan a story using the key features of beginning, middle and end with relevant vocabulary.  We will be developing the description in our stories to include even more description than Julia Donaldson!

In maths, we are beginning by recapping and mastering our understanding of number and the place value of digits in 2-digit numbers up to 100.  We will use this to support our learning of addition and subtraction where will be mastering and applying this knowledge by using number lines to add 1-digit numbers to 2-digit numbers, as well as two 2-digit numbers.  We will also begin to learn how to read and spell numbers to 100.

Term 1 home learning
We love to see all the fantastic learning experiences the pupils have had at home, pupils are invited to email in any home learning evidence which we will share some great examples of here. Thank you for your ongoing support.
