Year 1 - Term 2

22/10/2020

This term our unit of inquiry is ‘People learn and adapt in order to survive’.  The children will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
  • How can we convey a powerful message through art?
  • How have human organisations changed over time?
  • What impact did the choices people made have on the Great Fire of London?

Our unit of inquiry will lead onto learning about the Great Fire of London. The children will be learning about and sharing ideas based on this significant event in history. They will collect evidence about the main events, learn about significant individuals, including Samuel Pepys, who played an important part during this time and will look at the places that were affected by this event in history.  We will also look at how organisations have changed over time.  Within our unit of inquiry, the children will learn to use art to convey powerful messages about Remembrance day, the great fire of London and Christmas.
In English this term, the children will begin by exploring the features of and creating our own instructions for how to bake bread rolls.  This will link with our unit of inquiry learning and how the Great Fire of London started in Farriner’s bakery.  The children will create an ‘eyewitness’ description of the Great Fire of London and our very own newspaper report about the events of 1666.  The children will gather their own facts and information in preparation for this.  At the end of the term, the children will be exploring different poems related to the Great Fire of London.
In maths this term, we will further develop our understanding of addition and subtraction. We will be using different representations to consolidate this understanding and will challenge ourselves by reading word problems and explaining our reasoning. A new focus for this term will be on shape. We will be learning to recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes. We will sort these shapes by discussing their properties and will learn how we can use these in patterns.
You might like to join in our learning by…
  • Creating your own 3D house from Pudding Lane.
  • Making a timeline of historic events from the past.
  • Going on a visit to St Pauls Cathedral and Pudding Lane.
  • Finding out three facts about Samuel Pepys.
  • Drawing a portrait of Samuel Pepys, thinking carefully about different techniques.
  • Visiting Museum of London and writing a recount about what you have learnt.
  • Creating a news report about the Great Fire of London.
  • Creating your own art piece of what you might see out of the window if you were there at that time.
  • Researching the fire service.
  • Finding out about how humans have adapted to survive after disasters.
