Year 1 - Term 5

10/4/2018

This term our unit of inquiry is ‘Sharing the Planet’ and our key concept is ‘People interact with and share the earth’s finite resources’. We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
  • How are resources shared in different locations?
  • What is different about animals and their habitats around the world?
  • How do artistic techniques differ around the world?
Our unit of inquiry will lead onto learning about the difference between the UK and Kenya. We will be learning about the four countries that make up the United Kingdom, and will locate these countries and their capital cities on a map, as well as their surrounding seas.  We will compare the lives of children in the UK to those children in Kenya, including their school life. This term, we will look at and compare art from around the world and, in particular, we will look at African artwork and the techniques used. Also, we will compare animals we find in the UK with animals native to Africa and look at the similarities and differences. We will learn how to identify animal’s habitats and sort them based on these.
In English this term, our core text will be ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’ by David Conway and Jude Daly. We will start the term by making predictions and asking questions based on the front cover. We will be making inference about the characters feelings and will use role play to act this out. After story mapping and retelling the story using actions, we will be writing diary entries from Lila’s point of view. We will concentrate on editing and publishing our writing. This term we will also be reading ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett. During this text we will be writing letters and we will be using lots of descriptive language in our writing. Lastly, we will finish the term by reading ‘We are going on a Lion Hunt’ by David Axtell.
In maths, for the first part of this term, we will be introducing multiplication and division. We will begin by revising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Using our understanding of this we will be using stories, pictures and concrete manipulatives to explore making equal groups and write statements such as ‘there are 4 groups of 2’. We will use these equal groups to find a total, focusing on counting equal groups of 2, 5 and 10. We will explore making arrays by making equal groups and building them up in columns and rows. When we move onto division we will also use the concept of equal groups by sharing but we will also develop their understanding that some numbers do not group equally. Later on in the term we will introduce fractions. We will learn how to find and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity. Also, we will learn to find and name a quarter as one of four equal parts of an object, shape or quantity.

This term we are fortunate enough to have Sprint P.E leading balanceability sessions with Year 1. These will be taking place in small groups on a Wednesday afternoon. The focus is to develop their confidence and independence to ride a bike.
