This term our unit of inquiry is ‘Exploration may lead to discoveries, opportunities and change’. We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
- What geographical features are in our local area?
- How have discoveries led to change?
- How have famous discoveries impacted life today?
Our unit of inquiry will lead onto identifying different explorers and learning about their discoveries. We will research these and their impact on life today. We will be finding out in depth about Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, why they are famous and then creating non-fiction booklets about them. Following on from this, we will use maps and atlases to not only map out the journeys of these famous explorers, but also learn how to map out journeys of our own, discussing key geographical features in our local area.
In English our core text will be ‘Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs’ by Giles Andreae and Russell Ayto. We will start the term by making predictions and asking questions to develop and challenge our creativity in story writing. After reading the book in parts, we will use role play and hot seating to understand the thoughts and feelings of the characters in the book. We will practise making inference from the text based on what is being said and done. From this, we will plan and write our own pirate story with a beginning, middle and end. Our second core text of the term will be ‘Journeys’ by Aaron Becker which is a wordless picture book. We will be using these powerful illustrations to support and inspire our writing. Lastly, towards the end of the term we will look at some poetry, with a particular focus on acrostic poems.
In maths, for the first part of this term, we will be developing our understanding of the place value of numbers. We will begin by representing numbers using the dienes to show the tens and ones and we will then be using these to help us compare and order numbers. In addition, we will be practising counting in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s. Later in the term we will explore measurement, looking at length and height and then developing our knowledge and understanding of measurement by weight and volume.
In PE this term we have a very exciting introduction to Archery from Progressive Sport. They will run three sessions with Year 1 at the beginning of the term on a Tuesday afternoon. Following on from this, P.E will move back to our normal slot on a Thursday afternoon where we will practise some core fundamental skills.
