This term our unit of inquiry is ‘People learn and adapt in order to survive’. We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
- How can we convey a powerful message through art?
- How have human organisations changed over time?
- What impact did the choices people made have on the Great Fire of London?
Our unit of inquiry will lead onto learning about The Great Fire of London. We will be learning about and sharing ideas based on this significant event in history. We will collect evidence about the main events, we will learn about significant individuals that played an important part during this time and we will look at the places that were affected by this event in history. After this, we will use our DT skills to design and make a purposeful moving vehicle. We will evaluate these designs and discuss how things have changed in order to survive. Lastly, within our unit of inquiry we will learn to use art to convey powerful messages about The Great Fire of London.
In English this term, we will begin by exploring the features of and creating our own instructions for how to bake bread rolls. This will link with our unit of inquiry and how the Great Fire of London started in Thomas Farriner’s bakery. We will explore a range of descriptive techniques that we can use in our writing and will create an ‘eye witness’ description of the Great Fire of London to apply these. In the second half of the term, the children will create their very own newspaper report about the events of 1666 and will gather their own facts and information in preparation for this. At the end of the term, the children will be exploring different poems related to The Great Fire of London.
In maths this term, we will further develop our understanding of addition and subtraction. We will be using different representations to consolidate this understanding and will challenge ourselves by reading word problems and explaining our reasoning. A new focus for this term will be on shape. We will be learning to recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes. We will sort these shapes by discussing their properties and will learn how we can use these in patterns. Finally, during the last few weeks of the term we will revisit place value of numbers. With this, we will be developing our understanding of numbers by representing, ordering and comparing numbers up to 20.
In PE this term, we will be developing the children’s skills of basic movements including running and jumping, throwing and catching. We will begin to apply these in a range of activities.
