Our Unit of Inquiry – Year 1
Life before humans can be investigated through evidence left behind
Life before humans can be investigated through evidence left behind
Our unit of inquiry will begin by learning about Mary Anning and the role she played in discovering different dinosaurs. We will be learning about the lives of dinosaurs, such as what they eat and where they lived. We will also be making our own fossils and cave paintings.
Our core texts this term are ‘Katie and the Dinosaurs’ and ‘First Facts Dinosaurs’. We will be looking closely at how facts are written in preparation for our own fact books. We will also be looking at extending our descriptions in order to write diary entries and letters.

Lines of Inquiry
- How can we find out about the past?
- What are dinosaurs and how do we know they existed?
- Who has helped us to find out about the past?
In maths we will be focusing on addition and subtraction, looking at number bonds to 10 and fact families to 8. Throughout the term we will be reading, writing and interpreting mathematical statements involving addition, subtraction and equals signs, looking at how we can represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 10. Towards the end of the term, we will be focusing on problem solving, involving addition and subtraction, using concrete objects, pictorial representations and missing number problems.
