Welcome to Year 1

Term 2:

This half term our unit of inquiry is linked to how we organise ourselves and our central idea is ‘Over time, we need to learn from the past and adapt in order to survive.’ To support our inquiry, we will be focusing our learning around The Great Fire of London.

The pupils will begin this unit by completing a home learning project to design and build a house from Pudding Lane in 1666. The houses will then be part of the SKPS great fire of 2016 at the end of our unit of inquiry.

In English, we will be looking at the characters and setting descriptions. We will write our own newspaper reports, diary entries, listen to and perform a poem linked to the Great Fire of London and use imperative verbs whilst writing instructions for baking bread.

In Maths we will continue to extend the children’s number fact knowledge and skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Alongside this we will continue to practice our problem-solving skills through problems linked to our core text and theme. The pupils will begin to learn how to tell the time using o’clock and explore fractions including halves and quarters.

In Design Technology we will be learning about wheels and axles and using this learning to design and build our very own moving fire engine.
