Welcome to Year 1

Miss S Jones
Mrs S Horsell
Mrs R Comfort
Mrs S Banks

Term 5:

This term our Unit of Inquiry is ‘Knowing about our family’s history enables us to discover our cultural origins and develop historical awareness.’ We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
  • Who am I and where do I come from?
  • How am I like other people?
  • What might it feel like to be part of a different culture?
It has been fantastic to see so many children returning to school with their own family trees. We will be using our own family trees to ask questions about our heritage, as well as looking at the Royal family. Our Unit of Inquiry will lead onto learning about our country and finding out more about what it means to be British. We will look at our own culture, as well as looking at the range of other cultures that make up our school community. There will be lots of discussion around similarities and differences in order to compare these.

In English we will start the term by introducing ‘Katie in London’ by James Mayhew. This will be our primary focus for the beginning of the term, although we will be supporting this by looking at other books throughout the term.

In maths this term we will be revisiting our number fact knowledge and will use this to support our learning of addition and subtraction. We will also be experimenting with length, height and weight using practical problems to compare and describe. We will be asking lots of questions about how we found our answers in maths this term to practise our reasoning skills. We will look at a range of common 2D and 3D shapes and will use appropriate vocabulary to describe their position and properties. Lastly, we will be practising telling the time to the hour and half past the hour, discussing and sequencing our daily routines.
