This term our unit of inquiry is themed around ‘Sharing the Planet’, and our central idea is ‘Appreciating and caring for the world promotes growth and change.’ We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
- How do living things grow and change?
- Why do we need to look after our world?
Our Unit of Inquiry will begin by exploring what plants need to grow by planting our own seeds and making observations. We will also look at what plants need through investigations and at the different parts of a plant. We will be learning about how we can care for living things by learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly through having our very own class caterpillars! To finish our Unit of Inquiry, we will investigate how we can help to appreciate and care for the living world, for example, picking up rubbish and recycling or reusing.
In phonics we will be continuing to practise our blending and segmenting skills to read and write simple words and sentences using our sounds. We will learn to blend and segment longer words with adjacent consonants, e.g. swim, clap, jump and help. We will also continue to learn more ‘tricky’ words which we cannot use our sounds for, for example, ‘said’, ‘like’, have’ and ‘so’.
We will continue with our weekly PE lessons, where we will be continuing to practise our throwing and catching skills. Outdoor learning lessons will also continue so please make sure your child has their own wellington boots in school.
In maths we will be learning to use everyday language related to money and looking at how to measure length and height using non-standard measurements. We will also continue to practise counting up to 20 and looking at halving, doubling and sharing.

- Taking a look in your garden and seeing what types of plants and flowers are starting to grow.
- Getting creative and going on a walk to see if you can spot any flowers that you could either take some pictures of or have a go at drawing.
- Finding out what is a garden centre? If you’re not too sure, you could go and visit one. There’s a lovely garden centre not far from school. It’s called Notcutts Tunbridge Wells Garden Centre.
- Researching the lifecycle of a butterfly.
- Having a go at recycling. Can you tell your grown ups what can be recycled and what can’t?
