Reception - Term 4

18/2/2019

This term our unit of inquiry is themed around ‘How we express ourselves’, and our central idea is ‘Stories can engage their audience and communicate morals’.  We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
  • What is used to help us understand the story?
  • How does the way we share a story engage people?
  • How are the characters feeling?  How do you know?
Our unit of inquiry will begin by exploring the children’s favourite stories as we celebrate World Book week with different celebrations such as coming to school in our pyjamas and bringing our favourite stories in to share.  We will talk about what we use to help us understand the story such as the pictures and about good/bad characters.  We will extend our learning by looking at how we know they are good or bad through what happens in the story.  We will be learning to think about what the author or illustrator does to help us work out what the characters are like.  We will be developing our storytelling skills through orally retelling stories and role play.
Our core texts this term are:

In phonics we will be continuing to learn the phase 3 digraphs (2 letters that make one sound) such as ai, ee, oi and ow as well and trigraphs (3 letters that make one sound) igh, ear and air.  We will practise our blending and segmenting skills to read and write simple words and sentences using our sounds.  We will continue to learn more ‘tricky’ words which we cannot use our sounds for e.g. ‘was’, ‘are’ and ‘all’.  We will be learning to spell them correctly and apply them in our writing.
This term we will be swapping woodland learning groups and the children who have been to woodland learning will take part in ‘BEAM’ sessions as part of their P.E. lessons.  In addition, we will also be doing yoga once a week.  Please make sure your child has their P.E. kit in school each week and that they have tracksuit bottoms and a P.E. jumper as they will spend some time outside in their P.E. kits as we get changed before break time.
In maths we will be learning to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting and we will be learning to count on or back to find the answer.  We will be learning to double amounts using objects.  We will be learning to use everyday language related to weight and order two or more items.  We will continue to take part in our weekly Big Maths!  Beat that!  sessions to develop the children’s fluency.
Term 4 Home Learning
We love to see all the fantastic learning experiences the pupils have had at home.  Pupils are invited to stick in any home learning evidence in their books or upload evidence to Tapestry.  We enjoy sharing the children’s achievements in class.
Thank you for your continued support.
