Reception - Term 4

21/2/2018

This term our unit of inquiry is themed around ‘How we express ourselves’, and our central idea is ‘Stories can engage their audience and communicate meaning’.  We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
  • How do we know characters are good or bad?
  • What does the author/illustrator do to help us to understand the story?
  • Why did the author choose the particular setting?
Our unit of inquiry will begin by exploring the children’s favourite stories as we celebrate World Book day.  We will revise what we have already learnt about good/bad characters and extend our learning by looking at how we know they are good or bad through what happens in the story.  We will be learning to think about what the author or illustrator does to help us work out what the characters are like.  We will be developing our storytelling skills through orally retelling stories and role play.
Our core texts this term are:
In phonics we will be continuing to learn the phase 3 digraphs (2 letters that make one sound) such as ai, ee, oi and ow as well as learning some trigraphs (3 letters that make one sound) igh, ear and air.  We will practise our blending and segmenting skills to read and write simple words and sentences using our sounds.  We will continue to learn more ‘tricky’ words which we cannot use our sounds for e.g. ‘they’, ‘are’ and ‘all’.
This term we will be continuing to take part in ‘BEAM’ sessions as a class.  In addition, we will also be taking part in weekly yoga classes.

In Maths we will be learning to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting and we will be learning to use quantities or number lines to help us work out the answers.  We will be learning to use everyday language related to weight and order two or more items.
Term 4 Home Learning
We love to see all the fantastic learning experiences the pupils have had at home.  Pupils are invited to stick in any home learning evidence in their books or upload evidence to Tapestry.  We enjoy sharing the children’s achievements in class.
Thank you for your continued support.
