Reception - Term 1

14/9/2017

This term our unit of inquiry is themed around ‘Who we are’, and our central idea is ‘we are all unique individuals who belong to a community’.  We will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
  • Who am I?
  • What makes me special?
  • Where do I belong?
Our unit of inquiry will begin by investigating who we are as individual and as part of the school.    We will be discussing our likes and dislikes, doing self-portraits and focusing on the ways in which we are special.  We will also be learning about our roles in both Acorn Tree class and the school community.  We will be doing an individual timeline based on photographs of us as babies, toddlers and today and discussing how we have changed and developed.
Our core texts this term are ‘Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes’, ‘The Bog Baby’ and ‘My World, Your World’.  We will be learning the foundations of literacy and learning to discuss stories, link them to our own lives and to begin to listen to other people’s opinions and share ideas.

In phonics we will be starting to learn the phonemes (single sounds) such as s, a, t, p, i and n.  We will be beginning to blend simple words such as ‘it’, ‘sat’ and ‘dog’ as well as ‘tricky’ words which we cannot use our sounds for e.g. ‘I’ and ‘no’.
This term we will be taking part in daily ‘Write dance’ sessions as a class.  This is an exciting music and dance approach to develop the skills needed for writing.
In Maths we will be learning to recognise numbers and count with one to one correspondence.  We will also be learning to copy, continue and create our own repeating patterns.  We will be learning to use positional language such as ‘on’, ‘under’, ‘next to’, ‘behind’ and ‘in front of’ and to name 2D shapes.
Term 1 home learning
We love to see all the fantastic learning experiences the pupils have had at home, pupils are invited to email in any home learning evidence which we will share some great examples of here. Thank you for your ongoing support.
