Welcome to Reception
Term 6:
This term our unit of inquiry is themed around ‘Where we are in place and time”, and our central idea is called ‘“Journeys lead to discovery and new adventures. We will be learning about water and animals that live in the sea. To begin the term, we will be thinking about how to save water and writing sentences about what we use water for. We will be investigating water with some experiments, noticing how cornflour, icing sugar and jelly cubes change when you add water to them. We will also be reading Commotion in the Ocean and thinking about different creatures you can find under the sea, then making models of our favourite using clay. We will be writing poems about our favourite sea creatures. We will be finishing our topic by looking at the lifecycle of a frog and how they grow from a tadpole. During Healthy Living Week we will be teaching the children about the importance of staying healthy and getting involved in lots of healthy activities, including making healthy pizzas! We will be having our sports day which we hope you will come and join us, and maybe be part of a parent race!
This term we will be beginning to teach the children how to write in pre-cursive handwriting. When we start writing a letter we make sure our pencils are on the line, then ‘whoosh’ to the top of the letter to then form normally. An example of writing a ‘h’ would be ‘whoosh, tall stick, tunnel, flick’. Please feel free to ask a member of the team to show you how we form these letters in school and to practice this at home. In Numeracy this term we will be consolidating our number skills and using all the skills we have learnt over the year to solve problems. We will also be learning about money when playing in our ice cream shop role play and investigating the properties of 3D shapes when designing and making our own boats.
