Reception - Term 3

18/12/2020

This term our unit of inquiry is ‘How We Organise Ourselves – people in our communities work together to keep us safe’.  The children will be following different lines of inquiry to help us discover:
  • Who helps keep us safe?
  • Why do people work together? What would happen if we didn’t work together?
  • How has the way people work together changed?
Our unit of inquiry will begin by exploring our local community to look at signs and ways people help keep us safe. We will be learning about the individuals in our homes, school and local community and how they work together to keep us safe. Our core texts this term are ‘Emergency’ and ‘People Who Help Us’, as well as a range of factual books.

In phonics we will be starting to look at a new set of sounds, Phase 3. Phase 3 sounds contain diagraphs (2 letters that make one sound) such as oi, ow, ai, ee and some trigraphs (3 letters that make one sound) igh, ear, air, ure. We will also be looking at some new tricky words which we cannot use our sounds for eg.‘you’, ‘they’, ‘was’, and ‘me’. We will be continuing to practise our blending and segmenting skills to read and write simple words and sentences using our sounds.

In maths this term, we will continue to develop our understanding of numerals to 15 and will start to look at number bonds to 5. We will also be looking at 3D shapes and will learn how to use positional language to describe how items are positioned in relations to other items.

You might like to join in our learning by…
  • Talking about who helps us at home and how they keep us safe.
  • Discussing who looks after all of us in our community and why we need them to keep us happy, healthy and safe.
  • When you hear emergency services, discussing the type of sirens you can hear. Are they different?
  • Learning the number you would need to call in an emergency and what your address is.
  • Visiting the following website to find out fun facts and questions you can discuss at home https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/people-who-help-us
If you, or anyone you know, helps to keep us safe, we would love to hear all about their role and maybe even arrange a visit into school.
